Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the US president started showing the public his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently research projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the story of a mighty king arising; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape covert authorities. The apparent and clear reality that Christ from scripture requests a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the finest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it special and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply acting as if the most damaging of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it means both modesty and conviction, a mixture that genuine US believers should embrace.
