A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.

The purpose of the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested have been made, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Authorities said that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the building overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and wearing what looked like a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but fell down a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the incident.

Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to contact them.

"We know they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their location," stated a police chief.

His family member, a close relative, said the loved ones are reeling to process his death.

"Words fail me. I don't have words," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about subjects not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the community to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's three sons.
