A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
