Kalimuendo Scores as Forest Claim Sentimental Victory Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed through the City Ground as Nottingham Forest followers reveled in another result against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Francis's decisive header secured the continental trophy back in 1979, but the club still hold dear those memories. Similarly, significant shifts have taken place in the weeks since the manager took charge, with the team looking refreshed and earning a comfortable victory thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of progressing in the European competition.

Gaining Steam with Another Straight Victory

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after ending in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third consecutive triumph across every tournament and further built on the positive energy gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Anfield. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s historic success in spirit, the game itself was devoid of any real jeopardy or jitters.

It proved to be an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third clash between the teams since the European Cup final 46 years ago.

Forest leaned into the heritage, honoring the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their Malmö opponents, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Swedish club’s squad from then were also present. Both teams enjoyed a meal together prior to the match. Forest legends and their teammates were given a tumultuous reception when they assembled on the pitch 15 minutes before kick-off, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the home stand.

Remembering the Past

“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” read one part of a giant banner, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the squads came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant tifo depicted Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Outset

So, the hosts had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the evening? It was pretty good, too. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt off target inside two minutes and established a two-goal advantage by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defense captained by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The home defender Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a opponent and into the path of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.

Another Goal Seals Dominance

Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the verge of half-time, too, his free header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward poised to convert the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and only his second outing since September, was the catalyst, lofting a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected aside off the defender Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe, and an free Milenkovic also previously had a strong header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Villa goalie Olsen.

Malmö’s Struggles

This was the Swedish side's first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they struggled to equal Forest’s intensity. Forest made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a volley blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

Forest then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. Dyche, aware of Sunday’s league game here against Brighton, made seven changes from the side that stunned the Reds at their ground recently, when they also netted three goals, though he called on substitutes and further fresh legs during the final period.

Smooth Night for the Team

It turned out to be a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could take off the defender with the match long since sewn up and subsequently introduced 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the club legends providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop showed they are able of producing of thrills, too.
