Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Leadership Change
The former official announced he would retreat from public positions after House committee released his repeated messages with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

He stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the organization, and look forward tracking their progress".

The former Harvard president, who once headed the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public communications showed that the economist communicated with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the AI firm stated it accepted his choice to step down.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the company stated.

Congressional Action

This news comes after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the US justice department to disclose its files on Epstein.

The legislation will then proceed to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he plans to endorse the bill, after modifying his stance on the matter following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related messages made public by the legislative panel last week mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the academic to notable global figures.

Individual Statement

After the messages were shared with the wider community, he stated he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in communicating with the financier".

He further stated that he desired "to rebuild confidence and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".

Professional History

Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public roles earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in DC where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that he was not affiliated with the organization.

He entered the directorate of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive the company leader.
