Chicago White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Major $34 Million Agreement.

In a major move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The contract features a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing in the top ten.
  • An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Transfer Payment and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, surpassing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Despite striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 games. He started playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that brought home teammates for a thrilling one-run win. The very next day in the title match against the USA, he hit a tying shot in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on the coming Monday.
