Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop this new product within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts and Future Plans
The founder indicated how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
