At least 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Security Action on Organized Crime
No less than 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.
Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. Over 80 people were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities confirmed.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods close to Rio's airport is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Locals have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are presently concealed in the city.
