Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
