Investigative Source
A senior Russian military figure has been declared dead following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.
The incident happened on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators stated that one line of inquiry suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Site of the Blast
Officials have been dispatched to the scene, which is said to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.
Accounts suggest the explosion took place in a parking area near a residential building.
History of Assaults
Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This new event follows other high-profile incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a source from Ukraine previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of policy.
The conflict has witnessed shadowy operations moving into the heart of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
